Pittha is an authentic Bihari snacks very delicious in taste and very healthy too.
For making the cover: Wheat flour or rice flour
For the filling: Moong dal or Bengal gram dal (Chana Dal), garlic,Red chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt
For garnishing (optional): spring onion, oil, salt, green chili.
■Preparing the cover: Add water to rice/ wheat flour and mix well to make dough soft enough to be rolled.
■Preparing the filling: Soak chana dal or moong dal in water for about 2 hours. Grind the soaked dal along with garlic to make a dry paste. Mix turmeric powder, red chili powder and salt to taste in the paste. The filling is now ready.
■Preparing the pittha: Roll the wheat/rice dough and put the filling in the center.
Now fold the rolled dough in order to cover and press at the edges, resulting in a semi-circle shape. Now put the pitthas in boiling water slowly and allow it to cook for about 20 minutes. Take the cooked pitthas out of water and allow it to cool.
After it is cool cut the Pittha into slices.
Now the Pittha is ready to be served, however if you want you can sauté it with spring onions, black mustard(rai) ,green chili and use seasoning of your choice. The Pitthas taste best when served with coriander (dhania) chutney.
